The Turkmen (Turkoman) are a semi-nomadic tribal people who have lived on the harsh steppes of present-day Turkmenistan and neighboring Central Asian countries for thousands of years.
Turkmen silver jewelry carried deep symbolic meanings and often marked an individual’s passage from one stage of life to another. The silver is often gilded, or gold washed to highlight the design and inset with Carnelian and to a lesser degree Turquoise. Turkmen jewelry is notoriously large, with pieces worn on both the front and back of the body, as well as on the head, arms, and fingers.
