Caring for your Silver Jewellery

Caring for your Sterling \ Fine Silver Jewellery

Silver jewellery can be delicate and will require care to maintain its luster. Here are some tips to keep it in excellent condition:

Fine Silver (99.9% pure silver) is a softer metal than Sterling Silver (92.5% silver, 7.5% copper). For this reason Fine Silver is mostly made into earrings or pendants that, even if worn every day, don't get the same type of wear that rings do, however I’ve been wearing a stamped Fine Silver ring every day for over a year on the same right hand finger as 3 other rings, I polish it a lot on whatever I’m wearing, (not recommending that but I do it) and I’ve noticed the stamping might be getting a tiny bit worn but the ring itself is still perfect in shape and form, so I have no concerns about making and wearing any Fine Silver jewellery.

Note: Silver Jewellery Chains are usually Sterling Silver

Cleaning
Gentle Polishing:
Use a soft, lint-free cloth or even better a silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish. Please avoid abrasive cleaners or paper towels that can scratch the surface.

Mild Soap Solution:
Clean with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Gently rub the jewellery with your fingers or a soft brush, then rinse and dry thoroughly.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals:
Never use chlorine, bleach, or ammonia-based cleaners, as they can damage silver.

Storage
Tarnish Prevention: (Fine Silver does not generally tarnish, this is an issue for Sterling Silver )
Store all your silver jewellery in an airtight container or zip-lock bag to minimise exposure to air and moisture. Use anti-tarnish strips or silica gel packets to absorb humidity.

Separate Storage:
Keep all your silver pieces separate from each other and from any other jewellery to prevent scratching or damage from harder metals.

Everyday Care
Avoid Exposure to Chemicals:
Remove your jewellery before swimming, showering, or cleaning and avoid contact with perfumes, lotions, and hairsprays.

Prevent Scratching:
Be cautious when wearing silver with gemstones or other hard materials.

Frequent Use:
Wearing silver often can reduce tarnish buildup, as natural oils from your skin help keep it shiny.

Dealing with Tarnish
It's probably best to try this first.
You can use silver cloths purchased from a supermarket or jeweller such as Goddards Silver cloths which do a pretty good job.

OR

DIY Solution: (Great for cleaning up your Sterling Chains)
If you need to clean your silver piece and there are no soft gemstones (stones ranked a 6 or below on the MOHS scale - google it) and they are not antique or vintage enamel jewellery pieces, then you can use the following method.

Line a bowl with aluminum foil, add warm water, a tablespoon of baking soda, and a tablespoon of salt. Soak the jewellery for a few minutes, rinse, and dry. Avoid this method for pieces with delicate patinas or embellishments.

Professional Cleaning:
For heavily tarnished or intricate pieces, consult a professional jeweller.

Additional Tips
Handle with clean, dry hands to avoid transferring oils or dirt.
Avoid exposing fine silver to extreme temperatures, as it may distort or discolor.

With proper care, your silver jewellery will maintain its timeless beauty!
